My toddler and I went to visit the neighbours* last night.
When we left their house after a lovely visit, descending the front steps onto a darkened tree-lined drive with bare branches creaking in the wind, Izzy said:
“Why is it dark? I don’t like the dark.”
I had to laugh. My sweet girl isn’t a fearful child, but she’s human.
“Well, my love… humans are afraid of the dark because we don’t know what’s in the dark. It’s natural to feel scared of the Unknown.”
“Oh…” she seemed satisfied with my explanation but still anxious to be creeping through the night at the edge of the forest.
She softly peppered me with questions as we walked, and I tried—in the way mamas do—to share a little of the Wisdom I’ve been yammering about with you all season.
“When we can let the Divine Darkness into our bodies and our lives, it actually feels really good.”
She seemed skeptical, but before I could dive deeper, the automatic lights in our driveway came on.
“The light came on!” she squealed in delight. “That helps humans.”
I love her simple explanations and concrete thinking—it’s as if the whole Universe fits together tidily in her mind.
And she’s absolutely right—Light helps humans. That’s why we celebrate the return of the Light at the Winter Solistice.
When we got home, she explained matter-of-factly to her father, “Humans don’t like dark, because humans don’t know what’s in the dark.”
No matter how big she gets, these fundamental ideas will remain constant. Whether she’s 3 years-old or 83, she will feel—as we all do—the innate fear of the Unknown… and the beckoning of the Light.
This week, as the Solstice approaches, we are all exploring the dynamic between Dark and Light.
But while most are heralding the return of the Light… I’m here to remind you that there is Beauty and healing in the Divine Darkness as well.
Tonight, we’re coming together for a magical exploration of the Divine Feminine Darkness and the Light that shines even brighter in Her presence.

Light & Hope in the Darkness
As we descend into Darkness in the Northern Hemisphere, a sweet expansive space opens in our lives. The world so often presses close, but in the Darkness, there is room to breathe. How do we face the fear that is the key to unlocking that freedom?
And from this space of Everything and Nothing, how do we find the Light? Not the artificial blue light of lamps and screens… but the Light buried within Everything. Perhaps as we adjust to the Darkness, we will have eyes to See the Light.
Join us with your favorite brew for an hour of magical inspiration with kindred spirits in a safe-to-be-yourself space.
